When the tree gives users the error that says "This tree is taking too long to draw. We've changed your preferences below to reduce the number of ancestor and descendant generations," the tree should either automatically load the new reduced number of generations (instead of getting stuck on an error message where there are no clickable navigation links in the applet) or at the very least give us an "Okay, load this tree" button we can click to load the tree. As it is now, we have to refresh the browser to get the tree to load.
A wise man once told me something very important about UI design: Never make your users work around your UI. Design your UI around your users. In other words, never rely on user training ("Oh, just refresh when it does that.") to accommodate for inconveniences in your UI.
We could also still use some more descriptive error messages. I held off on making more comments about that because I thought such an easy correction as language editing would surely be included in the recent feature release. However, I am still getting generic error messages like "We were unable to complete your request" and the ever-prevalent "cannot merge two spouses" error which doesn't tell us who the offending profiles are.
I also get the we've changed your preferences when I've got it set to just two generations anyway.
@erinspice good idea, I'll see what I can do.
I also got the message "we've changed your preferences " message. if it takes too long-So be it.. I am prepared to wait.
We've added an "ok" button to the "taking too long" dialog, and that will go out with our next release.
As for the other errors, if you can provide the specific scenarios where you're receiving a generic error message, perhaps Mike can illuminate why we're not sending more detailed information.
Yay, thanks!
I can't really elaborate much on the others as I have no idea what's causing the error because the error is so generic. Catch 22, I guess. It happens most in the resolve conflicts window. It'll spin while it's going to the next part of the wizard, and then it'll just say something like "We're experiencing difficulties" or "We could not complete your request." I'll keep an eye out for it.
I encountered another generic error message today in the tree: "We've encountered a problem. We're having a problem completing your request. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact Geni help."
Very interesting erinspice. Thanks for sharing that...
@erin does that error happen where the preview ought to be, or after that?
I believe that one happens after you stack profiles and then approve the new tree by clicking "Save."
Another generic error message: "Cannot merge spouse/partner into the other spouse/partner." I want it to say "Cannot merge William 3rd Earl of Warenne into William III de Warenne because they are partners. Disconnect partnership first." or something like that.
Another: "You don't have permission to add onto that profile" should say "You don't have permission to add onto John Smith III's profile. Please contact it's manager, Jane Doe, to resolve this issue."
