Meet the new Geni profile

In the three years since we launched Geni we've added a ton of features such as videos, timelines, recent activity, and now public discussions. All of these features have been added to your profiles, but the basic design hasn't changed. This has led to some overcrowding, making it more difficult to find what you want on a profile. Today we are rolling out a new profile design with three goals:

    • Make information easier to find
    • Better readability
    • Room for new features

Here's a guided tour of the new profile:

    Basics

The top of the profile still includes the profile photo and the same information to the immediate right of the profile photo: Name, Immediate Family, and so on. The action buttons that were under the profile have replaced the recent activity module (recent activity has moved to the Overview tab, see below). The links that used to appear at the bottom of the profile, such as request management, now appear in the new More Actions menu under the other action links.

The background color of the basics section helps you identify what type of profile you are viewing; a blue background means the profile is a Geni user, a gray background means it is an unclaimed profile. We've also added a diagonal black stripe to indicate a deceased profile, just like in the tree.

    Overview tab

Underneath the basics you'll find a series of tabs. The first tab is the overview tab. This tab includes the most frequently viewed information such as recent activity, photos, and the guestbook.

The recent activity module has been enhanced to include full stories just like your family news on the home tab. We've also integrated the latest news for better visibility and easier updating.

    Info tab

The info tab contains reference information that isn't viewed as often as the information on the Overview tab: Personal, Education and Work History, and Favorites. Giving this information its own tab keeps it from cluttering the face of the profile while keeping it easily accessible when you need it.

    Timeline tab

The profile timeline now has its own tab as well. This creates space for additional timeline controls right on the profile, such as a date range slider and event type filters.

    Discussions tab

The discussions tab is part of the new "public discussions" feature. On your profile it lists all public discussions that you have started. On unclaimed profiles it lists all public discussions that mention that profile. This is a great way to communicate around a specific profile and meet other Geni users who share your research interests. Read more about Public Discussions.

That's the new profile in a nutshell. You'll find all of the information from the old profile, plus some new goodies. As always, we'd love to hear your feedback.

    looks nice,
but I can´t go into events. Not from timeline nor from photos. I see that the text is written "on the outside" but there is only one photo shown, and in many events are more than one photo.

Family Statistics values are chopped off (right side). The numbers should be right justified in the allocated column. Instead, they are left justified, in an insufficiently wide column.

@unnjoh: re: Events- are you getting a tech diff error when you click on the title?

@PhiDeck: Thanks-I just saw that. I'll let the other know.

@randols: Yes, this appears to be global. This, along with Events should be fixed shortly.

In Safari, the left and right arrow buttons for the "Photos OF" carousel are waaay to the left and right of the whole page. It looks like you'd click to "next profile" rather than next set of images. (Looks OK in your screenshot above)

I've often wondered why Geni uses "Jim" and James about 50/50 on my profile. Seems to flip between my name and my display name for some reason. Clicking to Edit Profile to confirm this, why doesn't the Edit worlds have the new look also? This look was designed months ago, seems like enough time to do more than a couple pages...

Also the message "You haven't added any favorites information yet." is amusing. Will Hal get mad if I don't add favorites? What's a favorite anyway? I suppose my favorite color is green...

Also, I like the squared tabs at page tops. Why the different tabs in Profile Info? It's already in it's own box.

Overall, I like the extra space for profiles and can see how this will give room to grow. I agree, I'm not sure why the change to a whole new style of tab versus those on the top of the page. Too much more of that and things aren't going to look clean and professional. I also don't really like the 3D/shadowing effect put on the email invitation boxes and the profile match boxes. Other than the profile photo, which looks reasonable, these are the only items with so much 3D effect and they look out of place.

I like the new profile page, it looks good. I noticed that the "memories" section isn't showing up at the bottom for all profiles though. I know that I entered memories for the following profile but it isn't being displayed:

Wow, this is quite an improvement!

....However, it appears that in the process, something happened with pdf files that were uploaded to the photo albums. Where they used to display the last page, they no longer seem to display at all unless you use the "view full size" option.

Some of the profile photos I uploaded and used on my relatives profiles are pdf files and they are now NOT displaying on the tree (it shows "photo error"), nor are they displaying on the profile nor in the photo album(s).

    As an example: http://www.geni.com/profile/index/6000000001165212639

Where is all the information I had stored under, I believe it was called, "About Me"?

The "unclaimed profile" grey background looks blue to me, or at least close enough that I can't see much difference unless I have a geni user next to it. Any chance in attempting a greater contrast, or possibly a tan or some color not so similar?

Many thanks for all of the improvements, however!

I had been trying to store genealogy information in the "about me" section for ancestors. I had lots of research, pointers to web links, etc. Now it all seems to be gone. Hours and hours of work. Was it all trashed? Has it been moved to some place I am not seeing?

    Overview tab, About Name_of_Profile

You'll have to click on "read more" to see it all. Unfortunately, they took the line-feeds out of the preview version of that section, so it looks different and is considerably less readable until you click "read more", which restores the line-feeds.

    @Noah
The new Profile format lost the link to my profile photo, which I had to restore.

Also lost some data: hair/eye color, height, religion, politics, graduate degree (but not undergraduate), etc.

Overall, a great improvement, I like it.

    A few points:

1 - As above, the pdf files seem broken and the links to them don' work.

2 - In the links section, the message "No links about [profile name] have been posted" appears even if there is a link.

3 - The link to [Profile name's timeline] under 'More events' in the 'Edit event' view links to the old-style timeline.

4 - In the Immediate Family section I prefered it when clicking on 'Ancestors' or 'Descendants' just refreshed that box rather than opening a separate list view.

5 - 'Recent Activity' has an overly prominent position as the second item on the 'Overview' tab. I think 'Photos' and 'Immediate family' are more interesting, certainly to less active users.

6 - The 'info' tab contains data from the 'Personal', 'Favourites', 'Work' and 'Education' sections of the Profile, but not 'Basics' and 'Relationships'. These last two sections contain much more important information and, in my experience, are much more likely to be completed. It seems odd that you have to click the 'Edit Profile' button to view this information.

7 - The 'more/less' links in the 'About' section are great, as it stops that section taking up the whole page (though I second the need to retain the line-breaks in the formatting when the shortened version is shown). Now that we have the text from 'About this event' in the timeline, could we have the same feature here?

@ashiya: yes, I got "tech diff error"´s , but now it works well again, thank you!

But now I see that the text in "about me" is not good. It is, hm, "unedited" is that a word? All text in one passage. In fact therefore nearly unreadable in many profiles.

If there is a "read more"-button, and I click that, then the text becomes the same as it is edited and was earlier.

The text in events is as earlier, the problem is in "about me".
