BUG: Long dead profiles can manage immediate family
(9 posts)-
I have the profile of a dead relative open. Under the list of his immediate family members is the link "add immediate family". I click the link and add a child. I navigate to the child's profile. The child's profile shows that it was added and is currently managed by the father (again, dead) and not me. In addition, I cannot edit the child's profile at all.

There are several reports telling that the profiles you use this new add functionality on becomes the manager of the added profile and not your selves, sometimes with the result that you sometimes don't even have edit access.
I recommend that you don't use this function until we know this error is fixed.

We are aware of this issue and should have it resolved shortly.
Once it has been resolved the proper Profile Adder and Manager should appear.

Sorry to post a duplicate problem then. Thanks for the update.

We've released a fix for the bug and I've updated the profiles that were created using "add immediate family" to reflect the correct creator/manager. If continue to experience the problem or if you have profiles that did not get corrected, please email help@geni.com .

Does this mean that all profiles managed/created by a deceased individual are now open to all for editing, or just those using "add immediate family"? I can see where this would be beneficial but I have used this mechanism to protect some profiles from being merged back into my tree. We had some malicious users on our tree. We were able to get the branch detached that these people resided on and then added their profiles back to our tree and locked them down permanently we thought by having them added and managed by a deceased relative's profile (which I have e-mail access to and actually control). That way they couldn't try to go around and con someone else into merging them back into the tree and starting their destructive mischief again...... I cannot remember if I used the add immediate family approach to add some of the profiles back......

@JudyD there shouldn't be an issue as long as you've set a password on the manager of the profiles that you're trying to lock down. We fixed the bug above by finding all the profiles that had been added using that "add immediate family" link and correcting their Added By / Managed By information to the person who did the adding.
