Horizontal Tree and Advanced Add Node
(7 posts)-
We’ve added two new features to the tree: a five-generation horizontal tree and an advanced add node form.
The horizontal view is an easy way to see a profile’s ancestry in a compact format and it makes tree building much faster. You should not have to wait for a tree redraw after adding a node.
The advanced add node form, which replaces the "more" version of the add node form, allows you to add a node with almost all of the standard profile attributes, including middle name, occupation, place and date of birth/death/burial, and cause of death. You can also add a birth order (this is limited to nodes who already have siblings or parents).
Switch to the horizontal with the chart icon in the lower right of your tree. You may switch between the views at any time. Switch to the advanced add node form by clicking "more fields" in the lower left of an add node form. If you've previously switched to the "more" version, you'll now see the advanced form when you click a yellow arrow. The advanced add node form is the default in the horizontal view.
Thank you to everyone who gave us feedback on the preview of these features. We've added single field location entry to the form, which will make it much easier to enter places of birth, death, and burial. We've also fixed a number of small problems you found.

"Show fewer fields" at "Add this person" form doesn't work for me in horizontal tree, but works in default view.
I notice if i had click "Show fewer fields" and go back to default, i have less option.
It seems like horizontal tree is stuck to advanced add node formPosted 3 weeks ago # -
Thanks Tengel--that's my mistake. The "show fewer fields" label shouldn't be available in horizontal mode; only the advanced node is enabled for that view. That fix will go out with the next file.

Hi Brad
I did PM you a video about horizontal tree and that it did not show parents.
This new video shows the "bug" better than last video i did PM you.In this video I have compare Geni horizontal tree with Family Tree Maker with same setup as Geni ( 5 generation view)
http://www.screencast.com/t/hk1F1btnm4
You will in this video see that Parents is missing at one of the profiles, so you have "Add this person" even that parents does exist to this profile.
You see this here (horizontal tree):
http://www.geni.com/family-tree?ref=ph#6000000003756194976"Add this person" in this case could create duplicates as someone that is not aware of it could add parents

i really like the horizontal mode feature and the ability to print a nice tree. there is a bug in how the tree decides to print dates with the name. sometimes it works, sometimes not. i would love geni to have more features like this to give options for printing the tree. how about a fan tree? or a descendant chart? and can the horizontal tree have an option to include siblings?

Looks good, and closer to other horizontal trees I have seen.
One suggestion (perhaps you already know, but just in case), if you can (or, when you) add a left arrow to the earliest-generation profiles (on the left), to browse to each of those profiles' children, it will make this all the more powerful.Posted 2 weeks ago # -
@tengel - thanks for finding that; we'll fix it. I believe if you do try and add the parents, you'll receive an error.
@randols - dates should show up whenever there's room for them. If the name is too long the dates will be hidden. We will have more print options in the future, and forcing the dates to always show up could be something we add.
@tstamps - we will add a more obvious way to descend the tree, but you can click the yellow tab on the right of any node to view the parents, siblings, and children. You can switch to the view of any of those profiles (i.e. children of the focus node).
