How can I backup my data?
(16 posts)-
I learned about backing up to a Gedcom file yesterday. I then downloaded a free veiwer to see what I got. It looks like about half of every thing was there, but I didn't find the notes I wrote about people in their profiles, Their schools they went to. The graduation dates and places were there. Their pictures only gave me the link. I found it easy to trace the linage backward, but not forward (that may just be this free veiwers limitations.
I find myself typing pages of family stories in. Looks like I will need to write them in word and save them to a folder before inserting into Geni.
How long has this site been around? I would hate losing the months of work I will have in this site. Does anyone know their backup procedures. I would sure love it if I could backup the whole site on my drive periodicaly.Maybe thats a feature they could add?

I aggree this is one thing that really concerns me, plus as the tree gets bigger and more family members gets added you also run the risk of hitting a person who isn't sure what they are doing and accidentally deletes or changes information that you can't get back

Buckeyejoe and tobeon
raise an important concern:
How do we back up family stories? We do need ways to back up everything we post.

This has been raised before in questions about the gedcom export that doesn't include the "About Me" section. In addition to stories, I've been using the "About me" to transcribe obituaries.
There has also been discussion of "pay for service" that would have geni send you a complete copy of your geni content (photos and all).

Genealogy is one area you want a complete backup. I have scraps of paper from my Grandmother in the 1980s, and the Geni info should also be pass-on-able.

All the same: a total backup including all pictures and comments.... more than welcome and even if it requires a premium to pay that would givethe opportunity to minipulate (merge...) GEDcom files.

It won't ever happen. If you could back up everything totally, a competitor would write an upload utility that lets you "easily import your Geni account!"

I would pay for a "read only" DVD with all my family info...
Geni could make their own software for this and one would have to say how many branches are included in one's tree ...Posted 3 weeks ago # -
@GENI TEAM: Are there any plans in the works to provide some sort of backup or export that would include everything (Stories, pictures...etc)?
This has been a concern of mine for over a year now, and I am sure it is a concern of countless others...., yet I have not seen any official acknowledgment that it is a valid issue that is being considered / worked on...!?!?!

The challenge with a backup is what to do with it and especially on what format.
Geni have chosen to use the Gedcom format since this format is accepted by most genealogical PC programs. This format does however have several variants and especially limitations in what fields it can contain.
When it comes to real backup I trust that Geni takes care of that so if they get a fire or other situation which destroys the servers they will be able to reconstruct the databases on new servers.

@grkirk we'd like to do this but it isn't our top priority right now. If we did provide this type of archive feature it would probably a premium feature.

And for those wondering, @brox is absolutely correct in that we do retain off-site backups of the data.

The other problem is, what do we do to protect ourselves in the event the Geni.com goes out of business?
It has already happened to me, a website that was storing my photos for the family to see, suddenly, and without warning, closed down. Fortunately, I was not using that site as my master, I had the master copies of all of the photos on my own PC.
Unfortunately, it is much more difficult, if not impossible, for us to retain our genealogical data on our own PC's with Geni. There is too much to back up manually, there is no way to download it all. We need a solution.

As @Frogone suggest I would also be willing to pay for backup DVD with a gedcom and all images plus some other formats, like a family "book".

For now our GEDCOM export feature is what we offer in the way of backing up your genealogical data. As Noah stated, we'd love to offer a more complete archiving service but it's not our highest priority -- we'd rather work on the features that will ensure that Geni will not go out of business. :-)
