I followed the link and joined facebook. I then began to search out relatives. After about 10 or so messages to those I thought were my relatives, I got a warning that I was abusing the system and if I kept it up, I would be banned. I only joined to search for relatives, so I un-joined from them. What is the purpose of joining them?

Facebook has a vigilant spam detecter. If you try to communicate with too many individuals in a single session, it suspects mischief. It's their way of telling you to slow down.

I ran into this when I did a copy/paste on my text for three consecutive messages because I wanted to say essentially the same thing to each. I actually was bounced from the session and warned not to do it again.

Yep, they can keep their service. I got out of it. I simply don't understand being part of something, then being denied the use of it.

    Dear Geni:

First off, let me say that I generally like this feature. I have a number of relatives who, for whatever reason, were not willing to give me their e-mail address to me so I could invite them to claim their Geni profiles. Strangely, not one of them had a problem with accepting the Geni invite through the Facebook connection. Go figure.

But I do have a complaint/suggestion: Please give us a way to invite a Facebook friend directly from their unclaimed Geni profile- allowing them to skip the stupid profile merge step. In other words, can you make it work just like it does when I enter a person's email address into their unclaimed profile and select "Invite"?

Not a bad idea, just have them put in their e-mail address when they come in.

But that's the catch: I think their profile would have to have an e-mail address for Geni to match it, unless you somehow invite them in a way tied to their profile number.

I guess Geni would need an "invite" link directly on the profile to do that. Which seems doable.

@Adiya: That is exactly what I am suggesting. You should be able to go to the person's unclaimed Geni profile and initiate their Facebook invite from there.

All this being said and rehahashed--i have found that using facebook with a bit of caution actually is a help. Many people seem to be more ready to give their info to facebook than to geni, that i just do not understand. But, as long as we can somehow work together--it's o k with me

That's becasue Facebook is all about "Look at ME" and instant gratification. It's so much easier and graphic to see "results" on FB ("That Hottie from High-School sent you a message..."). Seeing a "return" on information invested on Geni, or even understanding the need for it, is much harder.

    Hi Noah,

I appreciate the feedback and it's neat that you guys are taking steps to connect w/Facebook. The main thing i feel like is missing though is the ability for family pictures on Facebook to show up on Geni, with comments and tags, and vice versa. It might be something similar to the way you all connect with Picasa, but since it involves Facebook, it would likely be a bit different; perhaps if you guys can take a look at how some other photo websites interact with Facebook, that could bring to light some possibilities (i know Flickr interacts w/Facebook somehow); but maybe you all know how to do something like this already, not sure. I would just say what i mentioned before (http://forum.geni.com/topic.php?id=26581), that many of my family members, won't post pictures, comment on them, and tag them on both sites, it's just too much effort (and we really do have a ton of great pictures and conversations going via the comments on Facebook, so it would really do a lot for both sites if those pictures, comments and tags were viewable in both Geni and Facebook somehow).

Thanks again for the neat site, all the best,

    Brendan

This is actually working out really well for me. I've been more successful recruiting new family members through facebook than the traditional way. Cheers!

Ditto to tronica's post, I've had a few lines of my family filled in by connecting through facebook.

have had a number of relative on facebook join me in Geni, but Geni tells me they haven't been invited yet when they have, I personally invited them yesterday. what gives? one has even been adding data and isn't recognised or acknowledged by Geni. it makes it really hard to remember who I've sent invites to if Geni ignores the fact that I have sent one. this is in the bar on the right of my home page, in other areas (such as merge) it does recognise who I've invited.

@topaz can you send the details to help@geni.com so we can look at the specifics?
