New Enhancements: Merging Help
(32 posts)-
One of the goals of Geni is to create a single, comprehensive tree of everyone in the world. Part of this process is curating the tree by finding and merging duplicate profiles. We've made some changes to help the users who are engaged in this process:
Request Management
Every profile has a manager, by default the person who added the profile, who controls the privacy of that profile. Sometimes you'll find that a profile is more relevant to you than to the manager. Use the Request Management of this Profile link at the bottom of a profile to request management. If the manager approves, you will be the new manager of that profile. We hope that over time more profiles will be managed by those users willing to merge them to consolidate the tree.
Ancestor Permissions
You can now view the full profile of any of your ancestors. This will help you verify information when evaluating potential duplicate profiles for your ancestors.
View Tree
The View Tree button now appears on all deceased profiles. Keep in mind that standard tree privacy rules apply when viewing these trees. Viewing the tree will help you to determine whether a profile is a duplicate profile.

In my opinion there is a bigger need for "Transfer Management" where you as the current manager, and the only one who really knows which profiles that should be transferred, can transfer management over to somebody else.
This would also be the answer for those who want to get out of Geni or does not want to be so active any more.
Getting hundreds of request managements would just provoke these people more when they cannot be proactive and transfer management themselves. We already have a person that is so tired of merge requests so he have just done the only thing he was allowed to: deleted all profiles he was able to delete and changed the names in the remaining to just some garbage like "qwerkj".
I would also like to perform this as an answer on someones "Request Management" request instead of having to approve 50 more requests.
Secondly it would also be a natural action from me if someone responds on an invitation to join Geni. I would like to transfer management to that person on his/hers parents, grandparents, children, partners and siblings as a welcome gift because I cannot expect this person to become an active Geni user for weeks.
Especially the transfer of management on the child profiles is important.

To give credit when it is due, I think it is great that one now can view the tree for any deceased profile. For one thing, that's helpful in dealing with that person who has been trying to delete himself out of the tree. Finally we can actually see what's left of his tree so that we better can take evasive action.
And it is good that we can see the profile of ancestors.
But I agree with brox that the new feature for requesting management is sort of misguided, and it should be the other way around.

I think giving away management would be nice, but requesting management is actually better. I don't want to give away management of a profile to someone who isn't interested in maintaining it. By them requesting to manage it, I at least know that they're looking at it and interested.

Why must it be just one manager for a profile ? I think everybody who has added a profile should have equal rights to it after merges. Merging is getting hopeless, when there are too many managers in one family.

Don't misunderstand me, of course we need both.
It's just a natural response that you as the profile manager an knowing the structure should be able to transfer all profiles needed at once instead of having to click on accept for the next hundred requests you know will come when someone get active in a line you have built.
I am just worried that this will make our trouble with "you know who" even more when he get hundreds of "transfer management" requests without being able to control it himself by transferring management of all his profiles to someone else as he has asked for several times.

@brox "Push" management requests and bulk tools are a great idea. We have discussed these and decided to go with the current system initially. As always, you can expect us to expand this feature based on feedback over time.

What happens if:
1. You request to manage a profile because the current manager appears to have a more distant relationship than yourself and then, at a later date, the person themselves become aware of GENI and want to manage their own profile? Will they then be able to 'request to manage' or must it stay once it's been allocated?
2. You have had a disaggreement with the current manager and suspect they won't give up a profile even if it is a closer relative to you than them.Pinkle

@PINKLE
1. When someone joins Geni and sets a permanent password they become the manager of their own profile.
2. Currently taking over management requires the approval of the current manager.Posted 9 months ago # -
I just played with this feature and quite like it since I'm more active than my fiancee under who's profile we added a large gedcom. Anyway, I just wanted to report a bug that hasn't been mentioned here, though it may have been elsewhere. After _she_ accepted _my_ management request I got an e-mail saying, "Dear <her>, <I> has transferred management of <ancestor> to you." In fact it was she who transferred it to me.
Keep up the good work :)

@yogh Thanks for this report, I have confirmed the issue. I'll put in for a fix, thanks.

I (and another users) actually have problems finding profiles that we can request management of. We'd like to move some profiles from me to the other user.
Is there a rule used when the link "Request Management of this Profile" is shown?

I must be blind. I cant find ANY profile that has this message on it. I have a slew of relatives that I would like to request transfer of management on (including my own decesaed mother) from my second cousin twice removed. But no message anywhere. Whats up?

It is a small link at the very bottom of the profile. We plan to make this more prominent in the future. I believe you should see this on any connected unclaimed profile. If there are any specific examples of profiles without the link that should have it please send them to help@geni.com so we can investigate.

I just checked several - a couple that I Know CANNOT be claimed because they don't have email - this is what I find at the bottom of their profile

And that's about what it looks like, as well.
no hints of a tranfer management option.

I have now seen an example of this and have forwarded it to an engineer to determine the issue. Hopefully I'll have an answer on this soon.

This request management procedure does not work.
Posted 9 months ago # -
@Kille I know that it has worked at least in some instances. Can you please give us more information on your specific issue so we can address it?
Posted 9 months ago # -
Nope, no link whatsoever. Sorry.

@LarryG and dragonasbreath1: We've fixed this bug, you should now see the request to manage link on these profiles.
