Picasa Uploader!
(62 posts)-
If you are using Picasa on a Windows computer, you can have Picasa upload photos directly to your Geni albums. When you install the Geni uploader, a button will appear in Picasa. Click the button to upload groups of high resolution photos with a single click.

When will Mac Picasa-to-Geni happen?
Posted 11 months ago # -
Thank you thank you thank you!
I have been having problems with the Java Applet I had been trying to update from java 6.0.7.6 to 6.11 because my facebook java up loader was not working with Firefox. So when I completed the update my Geni java uploader did not work. I love Picasa and it was a great Idea to do what you have done!
I applaud everyone on the most magnificent Family socialization tool on the web.
And your ability to update its many features.
Thanks again and again StevePosted 11 months ago # -
This post is extended feature request :).
Next step would be making Picasa Web Albums integrate with Geni. Google is starting to offer OAuth (or something similar) to make integration with their services secure and risk free.
Each of the users that would like to use Picasa Web Albums can associate her Geni profile with her Google profile and authorize Geni to read, and/or write to Picasa Web Albums as photo storage.
Picasa Web Albums added full security option (in addition to Public and Unlisted) recently, thus this should add ability to manage access to Picasa Web Albums from within Geni.
Google Open Social initiative can feed Geni with more data and Geny can export activity streams out.
Google's face recognition software enabled in Picasa Web Albums can aid tagging photos (that is quite laborious process in Geni).

Yes!!! This rocks, absolutely-super-duper. I know it isn't a Pro feature but I can't help being happier about this one ;-) Seeing as I spent half of last week uploading 80 photos and now I can do the other half in a matter of minutes. Especially the high-res part.
I think if I didn't already have Picasa I'd download it just for this :-)
Thanks Noah & Team!

Hallelujah! It's a Christmas miracle. My MOM is going to be able to upload photos now. This is great.

@jimHere, we looked into this but it turns out there is no full-blown Picasa app for Mac. What they offer is an uploader that will put your photos on Picasa Web Albums, but that uploader does not support custom buttons. If/when Google releases a full version of Picasa for Mac, we'll do our best to support it.
I wonder how many of our Mac users would prefer an iPhoto plug-in instead?

We'd like to integrate with a number of web services including Picasa's Web Albums, Flickr, and maybe a couple more. As always, those projects would have to be prioritized with many other great features that we have planned.

I would! :-)

Just thought you might like to know that your Geni button for Picasa works perfectly on the Linux version of Picasa 3.
I would like to see the button have options that allow you to resize or watermark pictures before uploading them instead of having to export them first.

Hmm, interesting idea. We're currently having Picasa upload at 2048 x whatever, which we believe is ample resolution for both online viewing and premium printing services. The Advanced Photo uploader is resizing at 1024 resolution, though I'm lobbying to have that increased as well.

my only concern with any resizing is for scans of documents (like census records). Too much shrinkage makes them unreadable.Posted 11 months ago # -
iPhoto would be good.

</p>So even though it says I can view my original photo... that's not true it has actually been resized. Nice guys. 8-)

Will we be losing quality by using picasa uploads?

<p>Will we be losing quality by using picasa uploads?
</p>The very nature of a resize means, that yes, quality will degrade. How much though, tough to say.

Hmm, I just discovered that it's actually uploading at 1024 resolution, not 2048 as planned. I'll file a trouble ticket.
When deciding on the 2048 resize, we took a look at what some common printing sites recommend for their printing products. Based on what we found, 2048 x 1536 (or so) should be ample resolution for printing products as large as 8x10 photos, full sized calendars, or even larger. Resizing photos from your 10MP camera allows us to keep our storage costs reasonable.
