New Features - Timeline and Events

The Timeline, located within the profile, is a new feature that shows a visual history of the events in a person’s life. Each event lives on its own page containing additional information, photos, attendees, and comments about that event. It is easy to create new events and add them to your Timeline as well as the Timelines of family and friends who were there. As a result, you, your family, and your friends can collaborate to build a digital scrapbook of your life and the lives of anyone in your family.

Great feature, but how can we remove photos from an event if someone in the tree makes a mistake and tags the image incorrectly?

On each photo's individual photo page, you will see an 'Event' tag with an edit link next to it. To remove the event tag just use the edit link and choose the blank entry in the drop down menu.

I don't see an edit tag next to the event name, just a an edit tag next to the names of the people pictured in the photo. Could it be that only the person who "owns" the album can see and edit that tag?

Yep, that was it. If you "own" that photo (it's in your album) you can edit the event.

I was able to remove the incorrect image from the event photos, but it still appears as the event's "profile photo." Any ideas about how to correct that?

senseijack - if you select a different photo within that set to be the 'main event photo' for that event (by viewing on one of the photos in that event album), it will replace the main event photo.

Unfortunately, there are no photos for this event; or for the person that the event relates to. I guess that I could upload a placeholder image of some sort...

senseijack - we're working on a fix. removing all the photos should remove the main event photo. Please stay tuned.

Awesome feature! It's a good indicator for missing marriage dates and such, and I love the "Age 88" thing ;)

But somehow I can't press the [edit] on any photo to add or assign a photo to an event - nothing happens. I use Firefox 2.0.0.11 on WinXP, I have the NoScript Add-On, but of course I have allowed Javascript for geni.

And why can't I add photos from other's people's albums when editing an event?

@raeve: Are you attempting to add photos directly on the photo page, or from the photo organizer?

Adding photos from other albums (and tagging with other users' events) are two features we are working on in the near term. Thanks for noting that.

Giacomo: Adding an Event from the photo albums when viewing a photo seems to work now, however I can only add my own events there. Why not have an auto-completion, kind of like when tagging people, to choose events for other people?

I also noticed that when no accurate birth date is given (e.g. there is only a year but no month and day entered), the "Age 17" thing is buggy - sometimes it's displayed, sometimes not. Here's a picture: http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh87/skywalker98897/buggytimline.jpg

this is a really exiting feature, enhances the profile presentation enormously!

It's quite a powerful and complex addition. My initial comments are equal to raeve about the limited interaction between photos and events, not being able to add photos my father added earlier to events like my own birth :-(.

Instead of adding the photo to the event, I then tried to add the event to the photo. I found out, I need to add my selv as fan, attendee or participant to an event in order to be able tag a photo with that an event. (I have to connect myself in one way with an event, before the event is shown in the list of available options)

When doing that I found that if I tag an event to the photo, the date and location of the event isn't posted to the photos date and location?

If an event is chosen with date and location, surely the date and location on the photo should read the same?

Some bugs I encountered while using this feature:

    1) If you only have the year given in, say, a birth date, the timeline lists the event date as [year] December 0.

    2) When editing an event, it doesn't always update the location you have specified (sometimes it works, sometimes it says that the event has been updated, but actually wasn't). When you click to edit it again, the location fields are once again blank.

    3) This one's not a bug: Is there a way to reorder those events with no given dates? On some profiles, the timeline goes like: birth of profiled person's child, marriage of profiled person, birth of profiled person, death of profiled person.

    when clicking on "add event":

without having added anything to the fields, instead of:

it would be better with the:

you could then remove the "Add more details"

Great overall re-org. I suppose it's OK that the timeline is not Flash-based (like the main Tree). I was looking forward to "scrubbing" the timeline...

All this new stuff makes me fear the day when Geni is finally released (not a beta). Will there be a fee (get me hooked on time then charge me)?

In calculating the age that someone was when they started at each school, Timeline appears to be assuming that the school is in the northern hemisphere, even when the opposite is known, and that the school year starts in September.

I attended elementary, middle and high-school in Chile. In all cases the school year began in March. Ditto for a brief stint at university, before emigrating to the US.

Even in the US, some states start the school year in August, others in September. Hence, accurately guesstimating the age at which one began attending each school is dicey.

@jimHere- The features we have released (and are working on for our full release) will always be free.

@PhiDeck- If I'm not mistaken, it is much simpler than that. If only the year is present in an event (no month/day), we show the age you turned in that year. So the accuracy really depends on where your birthday falls within the year.

    De Keno,

That makes sense. I was inferring implementation complexity that is, in fact, absent. Thanks.
