I know importing GEDCOM files will take a lot of work but is there any timeline as to when this feature will be available?

    Hi Dustindk,

Thanks for asking about GEDCOM--we get a lot of questions around this feature.

We will roll out GEDCOM exporting first and that is due out fairly soon (near future). Having said that, please be aware that we will be rolling it out in stages (gradually)so that we are sure we do it right.

    Thank you GeniJo,

I think having an import/export option would be a great idea for users with many hundreds of relatives to enter (such as myself - yikes!). Comma delimited or Excel Spreadsheet imports would be useful as well. Your service is the first Gen service I have used. :)

Also, I appreciate the fact that you really want to do this right, instead of rush it out the door w/o any regard to the poor user. I come from a software background and have seen my fair share of this. Thx!

I agree that this is an important feature. My tree currently stands at 312 members, most entered by me. I'd hate to lose that work. :)

Glad to hear it's coming soon!

    Hi,

Just wanted to unerscore how important the ability to import from FamilyTree Maker is! I spent a lot of time populating the program only to realize that it was difficult to share with family members and get input. Your site makes that part easy, but I can't stand the thought of starting over. I'd love my family to be able to add/edit and to keep this from becoming static information. Printable pages is a second important priority in my mind. One nice feature of FamilyTree Maker is they make it very easy to convert the information into a template family tree album.

Thanks, looking forward to the evolution,
    Jeanne

PS- check out the newly launched myfamily.co, which allows for securing posting family photos and other documents, in addition to blogging.

I won't use geni until I can import my GEDCOM files. DOing the "export" first is literally putting the cart before the horse.

For me the most important thing is the gedcom-export.. Because without that I can't use gedcomp (http://www.lklundin.dk/gedcomp/english.php) and DISBYT (http://www.dis.se/denindex.htm).. And as soon as I can do that that is gonna do so much for my tree... I tried gedcomp before I joined geni.com and at that time my tree was only at about 150 persons and I got 3 hits.. Now it's on 3662..
So basically geni.com is holding me back from finding more information about my family.. Don't get me wrong I love geni.com but I think the security discussion is @!%&, if you look at the information already on the internet it's not gonna make any difference if YOUR FAMILY can download the information that they have already access to..
So please geni let me download the information that I have already access to..

I know you an download the GEDCOM but as long as you don't get dates and locations then it's useless....

there was a post in January -- said 2-3 months. Even a simple import function would be really useful.

    Merging/dupe removal... even better.

Export and import with dates and locations: better.

Export and import with comments and custom tags: better still.

(p.s. I really want to be able to cite sources -- scan in photocopies of original documents, share them, but most important be able to reference those as the relative document.)

Can we please have an update on when an import facility will be available?

GEDCOM, even a limited sub-set, would be welcome, but if not how about a CSV import facility?

Also a Family Tree maker devotee. Over 1000 individuals in tree. Not interested until I can upload.

The ideal goal would be a user-friendly way to freely
connect between Geni.Com and sites like FamilyTreeMaker
so data could easily flow from one to the other.

GEDCOM (apparently) will only import/export basic outlines.

Agree with James Griffin. Please focus on import and export for fields that are present in the popular programs like FTM.

I still have my data in AFT which I don't think you can download anymore after the FTM monsters ate them up. Searching for the Ancestral Family Tree program now seems to leave me at Family Tree Maker's site. I'd like to be able to just move the data out of AFT directly into GENI.com and leave it behind.

Are there plans to make Geni into something that will have the feature sets of AFT or FTM or is just focused on living people connections? I hope the genealogy junkies will get their fix and that will be used to bring in relatives who will contribute photos and stories.

Still hoping you will allow individual users to create their own genealogy "spaces" that can use contributed elements. So that others can't mess with my presentation but they can use my contributed elements also.

I completely agree with everyone. Importing is SO SO SO SO SO important for SO many of us! I know many of us would love to give even the most basic of import functions a try. Perhaps you could contact those of us directly that have expressed great interest. "Alpha" testers of a feature in your "beta" software. How's that? :)

yeah, I've sort of "lamed out" from updating my Geni site because I'm too frustrated not having an import function. I've got my data manually entered in like two or three programs now (including geni.com) and none are complete.

I am using geni.com as little as possible until the import and merge functions are working well... and that'll probably include non-essential vital stats data -- i.e. I don't expect to get excited about geni.com again until I can import all my existing data, including source notes from AFT.

Like Turnkit I too am simply not using Geni until they support GEDCOM import & export properly.

I am actively discouraging relatives from using Geni too, because of the problems I hear exist regarding the merging of trees on Geni.

I am concerned that there is no update from the Geni team on timescales. Two weeks ago I asked "Can we please have an update on when an import facility will be available?" - but there has been no response.

I would suggest that good PR requires Geni to provide a table of upcoming enhancements, including estimated dates for implementation, and to update it both frequently and regularly. They must have this information, and they should share it with their (potential) users.

I have never done this before
We started our tree 2 months ago - we have members joining from Croatia, New Zealand, Australia, Cuba, Argentina, France, Serbia
The problem I have is Gedcom file. After couple of invites to a wrong part of the tree
(not difficult when you have same names appearing over and over again in the same family - I had one 14 times) I have tried with inviting people as friends, now I can't transfer them to members (I know that I can contact Geni), decided that I will send info first before inviting them. I did that by copying the screen list and editing it. I tried to download some genealogy software - but ended up just with the spreadsheet list with names and data but no relationship.
Any suggestion on reasonable (if possible) free software to reading the Gedcom file
