This profile has 5 similiar profiles. I requested the first one, when I return to the page it shows 'Merge Request Pending'

I did the second it still shows 'Review Match'

Judy D on "E-mailing the Hot Match list"

I am not liking the idea that Geni has started e-mailing the Hot match list to all the Geni users and encouraging them to take action. Most users are not Geni knowledgeable in how to get around the basic tree and do basic functions......encouraging them to do merges when the merge issues aren't yet under control does not seem like the best course of action to me.

Besides now I am getting all kinds of e-mails/complaints from people on my tree being asked about this and telling me to take care of it...... Plus I have had the issue for awhile now where Geni shows me names that supposedly have 1 Hot Match. Not being Pro I have to go to the lame search box and input the name and see what comes up. Luckily in this case my family are obviously aliens dropped here with E.T., so only one match comes up...unfortunately it is my profile...so Geni is matching my profiles to themselves and this is of course happening to people on the rest of my tree as well. They do a search and the only result is the original profile.....My family doesn't understand any of this and doesn't want to..... It just confuses and or irks them about always being hounded to go Pro.

Why has Geni decided to encourage everyone to look for Hot matches...oh right so they will become Pro.....90+ percent of the people you try and encourage to become Pro and start merging are not going to be tech savvy enough to do this...and I think you are making a bad situation worse. The new tools you have just released are a great step forward, but there is a long way to go before the merging issues and problems that have been built to date are under control and fixed. Sending the uninitiated out in droves to "learn as they go" may not be the best way to help the situation.

erinspice on "How to correct a profile's parents?"

We have many, many profiles with multiple sets of parents listed. Now that we cannot correct the parents by editing the profile (under Relationships), how can we correct them? When I try to do it in the Flash tree (resolve conflicts), it usually tell me that I can't do that because it would split the tree. How do I correct a profile's parents without splitting the tree?

Sidenote: I have complained out loud so many times about that damned splitting the tree message that it has become an in-joke between my husband and I. "Oh no! You're going to split the tree! Can't split that tree! ;) "

Noah on "Merging Enhancements"

We've released a number of enhancements tonight designed to help facilitate merges:

Merge Issues List

Use the show advanced controls link to expose new columns and filters:

New Columns

Modified by: The last user to act on the merge issue, usually the person who created it

Modified on: When the merge issue was last modified

Manager: The manager of the profile with the merge issue

New Filters

Merge Issue: View a specific type of merge issue

Show only modified by: See all merge issues modified by a certain user

Show only managed by: Only show profiles managed by a certain user

Note the modified on and merge issue columns are sortable.

View your merge issues list

Pending Merges

Separate immediate families: The immediate family accurately lists the immediate family separately for each profile. This helps you determine which immediate family members each profile brings into the merge and verify whether you are merging the right profiles.

Choose request recipient: Choose which manager should receive your merge request (choose from. anyone who managed a profile that was merged into the profile). Use this feature to route your request to the manager most likely to complete the merge.

Pending merge date: The date the merge was created now follows the name of the person who created the merge.

Removing relationships

Sometimes breaking a relationship is the easiest way to correct certain parts of the tree. But breaking relationships can be dangerous because it can also break the tree into two separate, disconnected trees.

Because Pro users have additional tools, such as advanced search and tree matches, that can help them connect broken trees, they can now remove any relationship on a profile (if they have permission). Relationships that may break the tree are now listed in a separate section of a profile's relationships tab in the tree. Please be careful out there!

sanketr on "Wrong Email used for Registration"

Hi Folks,
I need some advice on the following issue:

I registered to Geni using a wrong email address and started building a tree. After a few days I tried logging in but had forgot the password so tried to using the Forgot Password link but now the password has been reset and the link has been sent to the wrong email. The wrong email belongs to some other person and until he replies I am stuck. What can I do? I contacted help@geni.com but the guys are not replying.

Here is the issue with example for any Geni employees that might want to help me here:

I wanted to create a account for my uncle with the email naren.xxxx@gmail.com but instead created it with narendra.xxxx@gmail.com. The next time I tried to login and could not I tried the forgot password only to realise that the email I was using is wrong. I realised this because when I tried to login to narendra.xxxx@gmail.com it kicked me out.

Now I am stuck with a wrong person having access to my tree due to my mistake. That person is not replying to my emails so basically I have a dead node in the tree. Unfortunately this is the main node so I cant proceed.

Please help

Gary_K on "Merge Issues / question & suggestion"

Suggestion:

How about an option to sort the Merge Issue list by "Merge Issue".
In this way, we could deal with all of the "Conflicting Data" issues with ease, instead of searching them out of a random list.

Question:

What is the designed workflow for working merge issues from the Merge Issue list?

I click on one of the conflicting data issues, resolve the data conflict, then click on "Save" ...only to find myself viewing the profile of the one I just resolved.

To get back to another issue, I end up using the browser "back" button, back through the resolved data screen and then back to the merge list.

Am I missing something, or is this as designed?

Thanks!

I was walking around my tree today, and I saw two profile that looked the same. The only way to see if they are the same is to open them both and compare between tabs or windows. Is there a way you could rework your existing "Profile issues" sheet (where you click on the correct data) to show non clickable data from both profiles? and therefore I could back out and do an edit -> move and cycle them.

When two profiles are merged we create a data conflict page for any data that didn't match, such as different dates of birth or current locations. If you have edit permission on the profile you can choose which data is correct to resolve the conflict.

Now if you don't have permission, you can still select the data that is correct and send a request to the manager to resolve the conflict. When they receive the request, they will view the data that you selected. They can then resolve the data by accepting your suggestions or choosing their own. We hope this makes it easier for users to resolve data conflicts.

Can we get a way to refresh the contents of the "Map these People" box without having to add a node to it? I find myself everyday stacking people this way with two tabs open because the two people I'm stacking are not in the same tree and thus not viewable in the same tab. When I add one of them to the "Map these People" box, I have to go to the other tab and either refresh the page or add someone else to the box for the first node from the other tab to show up. Refreshing the page can lose my place in the tree, and then I just have to remove the unneeded node after stacking the profiles. A little "Refresh" link would be great.

The immediate family section of a persons profile could look something like:

Immediate Family:
Daughter of Olof and Katarina
Wife of Petrus
Mother of Axel, John, Alexia, Adolf, and Kjell

If you have several "Olof" and "Katarina" you don't always know which "Olof" is reffered to. I would like it to show complete names like:

Immediate Family:
Father: Olof Olovsson
Mother: Katarina Persdotter
Husband: Petrus Edlund
Half-Sister: Sara Olovsdotter
Son: Axel Edlund
Son: John Edlund
Daughter: Alexia Edlund
Son: Adolf Edlund
Son: John Edlund.

It isn't always that they have the same last name. In Sweden in the 19th century it was common for a child to get a lastname son or daughter of. If the fathers name was Eric a son would get the last name Ericson and a daugher the last name Ericsdotter.

If you do as I do and print each profile on paper to easy check/compare information it would go faster to find which of my 20 Olofs that is the correct one.

It would be nice if the immediate family could be displayed in a "tree view"

The two boys also have another half brother out west through their father.

Thanks to Geni's latest "Popular Profiles Enhancements" a lot of the historical profiles are getting LOTS of attention from casual Geni users, who it seems have little experience of what the "big tree" means, or what being in ANY shared tree entails, if they have ever merged a tree at all.

So of course everybody wants to be part of the "popular" tree, and looks for a way to merge with it. The result - merge madness! In the past two days since this feature came out, FIVE different trees have been all merged through a single profile that I manage. NOT one of the five people involved ask me to Collaborate or join Family Group. They just went ahead and merged (finalized). I have NO idea how this is possible (as they show no connection to anyone I know). What this means is that what used to be a carefully maintained tree, is now a huge duplicate mess of a tree that I can do absolutely nothing about. I spent a couple of hours dealing with about 10 profiles, and they are STILL a mess, never mind the hundreds of others... I have invited all of the five, to join my Family Group, but only one even responded.

I'm sure this is happening all over the "big-tree" with other of those most popular profiles. There goes all of the careful work of the "power-mergers". I have changed my "managed profile" settings to the most severe, to hopefully slow this tide. But I doubt that that is enough what with "editor" rights and such. I suggest anybody else who manages these popular profiles does the same, until Geni provides some means/tools to handle these crazy situations.

Kelly Jean Jankowiak merged a duplicate profile for Noam .. 2 hours ago
Congratulations! Your tree was merged with another tree. You are now connected to 28523128 people on Geni.

is a nice cute touch, but it doesn't DO any practical good. What we need is a warning screen BEFORE the merge goes through, explaining that in order to merge trees
1) they will be required to accept some form of cooperation (Family Group or Collaboration) from the manager(s) of the tree they are merging with.
2) have to change their profile settings such that people outside their family can actually SEE them (all of the trees merged above are locked up tight).
3) respect the other managers wishes, especially in the "main trunk" areas where literally years of effort have been invested.

Basically, what we need is some form of Moderation (yesterday) and tools to merge entire families/trees (ASAP). But in the mean time, I strongly suggest y'all batten down your hatches, and prepare for Merge Hell like you've never seen before!

So after haven been inactive for some time, I see I have some requests to collaborate in my inbox.

I have the options of:

    * Accept Request
* Decline Request
* Send Message

but there is nothing that informs me of what this is and what happens if I accept?
It is assumed I should know this? Not even a link to more info? That is pretty poor from a user point of view.

Since I don't know what it is, I guess I should just decline any requests as spam....
