I don't understand why Geni goes through the "cycle". Why don't they just list the relationships and allow us to remove them. Why must I create a cycle to remove an incorrect relationship? I often intentionally have to created a cycle by making the a married couple children of the same parents, removing the spouse relationship, then restoring the correct parents. With this change, looks like I won't be able to do that anymore. At some point, the cycle is going to be broken and I'm going to be left with an incorrect relationship. Just list the relationships and allow me to remove them. It should be almost as easy to remove a relationship as it is to create one. If it's going to split the tree, then perhaps instructions on how best to deal with it.

brox: "In the Add Profile you always have a check-mark you can choose (...)" Yes, I know that and I check, but sometimes when adding many profiles I forget, but I know how to check in my lists to see if I accidentally made them "shared". But all other members in my tree do not know. I have to tell them, and I don´t think it should be the first information I have to give new members. It gives not good good will. (please forgive me my bad English)

Take a closer look: In the Add Profile you always have a check-mark you can choose whether you want this profile to be shared or not.

I do however dislike that the bulk share option will share profiles born after 1900 just because they are outside your family group.

@mike - that will not help, unless you remove the blocking of showing break-cycles only when a profile is "clean", i.e without any merge issue.

It is in the middle of a merge process we urgently need a method of splitting the tree and selecting parents.

Could you please tells us what kind of problems splitting the tree would make?

I can't see any, except that profiles "hanging in the air" probably should be marked or listed in the sidebar or another place, but they always shows up in the managed/added-by list, and they are also easily picked up by the search and hot-match functionality.

I am finding such profiles every week, and I am currently working on a line where I intentionally have cut loose some branches and bookmarked them to be reconnected when finished.

Yesterday I found out that someone had merged together the Nordic kings Halvdan Milde (the mild) and Halvdan Hvitbeinn, and without the Select Parents menu and other methods for splitting the tree it is impossible to fix the error unless the tree is totally clean without any pending merges and you have edit access to all profiles.

Whoa, settle down there Scot Hibb! Obviously, you are very passionate about your account and apparently have no life, that you need to brag about how many people you have invited and profiles that you have created. I expected backing from a GENI PRO member, not complete assholeness! Congrats for being there since day one and being the 1st one to sign up for a PRO account. Really dude, it only cost $300 for a lifetime account, I just would think that there would be some sort of referral bonus, but they obviously wouldn't give it to a peon like me. Instead they would give a referral to a god like you, right? So sorry for stepping on your forbidden ground, obviously you think you run this place.

We've heard recent reports of terrible slowness, and so far I think they've all come from International users. This certainly seems like a networking problem. Because our pages embed code from Google, Facebook and our advertising partners, it's quite possible that the problem could be caused by any of these. We're still collecting information about the problem and one thing you can do to help us, is to let us know what the status bar at the bottom of your browser says its doing; it could be any of:

* connecting to http://www.geni.com
* connected to http://www.geni.com
* transferring / downloading data
* connecting to facebook.com
* connecting to google.com
* connecting to some other site
* something else or just blank

If anyone experiencing this problem uses a tool like Fiddler, a saved session during the time that the problem occurs would give us loads of useful information.

Pro or not, our position so far has been to try to prevent users from splitting the trees. Obviously this poses some problems if people have entered connections that are just plain wrong. At this point your best bet is to email help@geni.com and explain the situation (with links to the profiles).

@dmleforce, yes if you find in necessary to invite someone into your Family Group to conduct a merge, in a lot of cases I think it does make sense to subsequently remove them (here) after the merge is complete.

<p>If I understand correctly, a family member of yours has added historical religious figures (YHWH, Jesus, whomever) to your tree as ancestors and your concern is that if these merge into the duplicates elsewhere on Geni, this will make other users into "blood relatives" when they should not be, thereby granting them permissions that they otherwise would not have; is that correct?</p>
<p>I see this as less an issue with dubious genealogy than blood relatives permissions in general. In order to get to Adam & Eve your relative must have added a whole lot of ancestors in between, and some of those are surely verifiable. After a couple significant merges I'm constantly turning up 20th and 30th cousins on Geni, and as such they are given the same permissions that all blood relatives get (viewing my tree, most notably). We're rapidly moving to a point where many, many thousands of Geni users are blood relatives of people they don't know from Adam (heh). I wonder if it's time to reconsider blood relative permissions, maybe pull those back to some reasonable cousin distance?
</p>

You do understand correctly. And yes they did add the whole line.

I've added a lot of people...by hand. I'm trying to find at least one person from every surname to handle their own surname/in-law tree. Because I did add therefore do manage so many I have to invite a lot of people to my family group to merge. I can't get people to understand my family plus anybody I invite to my group can see & edit things I manage. I can't get them to see that it's therefore important for them to get these things out of my control.

What's the alternative...invite to family group just long enough to merge then delete invite to family group?

Thank you very much for your help. :)

<p>Please don't talk about religious freedom at the same time as you attack and want to censor others freedom to add connections and what they believe in. That is just too stupid.</p>
<p>When it comes to relationships you can't even trust that your father is your father.
</p>

Your statement..."I'm attacking & wanting to censor others freedoms"...this website isn't your work of art my dear. If you want to go some place like Tribal Pages & add your tree & connect to fictional characters be my guest. They have no rules about merging...they are indeed personal trees.

To add fictional characters here...after you've already invited & merged with others making YOUR tree OUR tree...is to shove your opinions & beliefs down other people's throats. You've taken away their right to be connected with their own fictional characters or in some cases no characters at all. Plus, due to the rules about merging, you've also taken away their right to privacy. So if you're adding characters I do believe you're the one playing "the tyrant".

This was supposed to be a democracy. I haven't seen one thread in our family forum asking "what religion are you"? much less "should we add fictional characters to our family tree"? "The tyrants" just did it.

If I'd been asked I'd have to go with no because I think it's enough that Geni hosts a bunch of dead people's memorials. There's no possibility of them ever paying for a pro account. That alone is lost server & database space. To ask Geni to host a few hundred fictional characters too...that's not only stupid it's also rude.

And your last statement??? To not trust that my father is my father is to say that my mom was a hoochie. Plus I look just like him so I'm pretty sure I'm his.

Well maybe. I note that in Geni the profile shows only the 1815, and does not have Circa ticked.
If it is a standard genealogical notation to use ABT or ABOUT then maybe it will be useful to translate this to Circa.

However my question was more around:
Input (GEDCOM upload) = ABT 1815
Geni shows 1815
Output (GEDCOM export = ABT 1815

I would have thought that I would just get 1815 on the export instead of ABT 1815.
It seems to indicate that a GEDCOM export may not be exporting exactly what I'm seeing in a profile. Or does the profile just display filtered data from the import? Does that make sense?
What would have happened had I edited the profile birthdate, then exported?

"When you add a profile outside of your maximum family group (your default family group plus inlaws connected through ex's) it will be shared by default".

I don´t like that at all. Want it to be canceled. No shared profiles by default. I´ve accidentally made a lot of profiles "shared", and my brother over hundred, and it took a lot of time, words and pictures for me to explaine to him, and now I write to other members in my tree about this. I understand it can be conveniant for some, but not in a such a social and private tree as ours, and I beliave many trees are like ours.

I also think this makes the privacy in Geni very inconsequent: to increase privacy Geni "limited from fifth cousin to fourth cousin", but with the other hand Geni with this option open up entire trees by default to all Geni users?

What is the best way to respond to this:

Subject: Removal of ALL OF YOUR CRAP FROM MY TREE

PLEASE TAKE ALL OF YOUR ADDITIONS AND PHOTOS OFF OF MY TREE!!!

I don't know what to do. The person is not in my family group and I do not collaborate with them. I can't even remember what profile(s) they have. I remember seeing their name as a manager on a profile. I think it was a Pilgrim line. So many people have merged into that profile, not just me.

Do I ignore the message? I don't know how to phrase a response. What should I say, if anything? I don't want to start a huge mess. She's obviously upset as it is.

I'm not sure I'll be able to reproduce it again as I just figured it would still act the same if I clicked on it as usual to complete merge and did so.

Certainly if it happens again I'll screen shot it for Help.

I realize this issue has been brought up countless times, and if memory serves the answer has either been to ignore the question or the infamous "coming soon" answer. I was just wondering if there was anything being done to address adopted siblings or children. I have a sister and a aunt that were adopted into my family and would like to include them in this tree but would also like to keep the tree acurate. Right now I have just added my sister as a blood relitive but my aunt does not feel comfortable not acknowleging her birth parents.

So Geni, my question is will the adoption issue be addressed or not, and if so is there an ETA on it?

I am thinking along those lines..it might come back to the concept of the "Super Manager'

For example if you are a Super Manager of profiles in the protected part of the Big Tree and I collaborate with you, if I want to merge a profile IT MUST GO TO YOU TO MERGE.

This may seem either stupid or obvious (not sure which) but would a solution lie in trying to preserve the "Big Tree" and when a branch or section is known to be correct a person can apply for it to be a protected area of the "Big Tree" and then when other branches need to be split off they can be unless already under protection, so the messages would be something like: "this request could not be completed because it would cause a split in the Big Tree" or "Do you wish to continue with this request as it will cause a branch to become split/isolated/floating."

ragjaws, the value is to Geni: you get excited that you can prove you're related to (celebrity) and so you sign up to pro to find out how. Geni said in another thread that they want to make it useful to everyone but didn't elaborate on how. I'd like to know how but, to be honest, I'd rather just disable it too.

@ragjaws - if this isn't useful for you, I would suggest hiding it with a simple Greasemonkey script

// ==UserScript==
// @name Hide Geni ad banners
// @namespace <http://taguri.org/>
// @description Hides popular profiles link
// @include http://www.geni.com/*
// ==/UserScript==

function addGlobalStyle(css) {
var head, style;
head = document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0];
if (!head) { return; }
style = document.createElement('style');
style.type = 'text/css';
style.innerHTML = css;
head.appendChild(style);
}

addGlobalStyle('#popular_profiles_home { visibility: hidden ! important; height: 0px ! important; }');

Everytime I go to my Home Page see 'Are You Related?' to Queen Elizabeth or Francis Ford Colla or whoever, I get so damned annoyed that I wish there is a little X on that feature that I can disable it.

I waited for a while to see the value to this..if someone in very plain simple English can explain it to me...I would be forever beholding.
