This is also driving me crazy. Absolutey nuts. I have been helping many of my relatives track down other relatives. For example, yesterday I found the immigration records for my father's sister's husband's grandfather.

She was very excited

I put in an event for him in Geni for immigration. And promptly couldn't see it... because of these annoying filters.

So I readded it, clicked on the little item and put in all of the info.

I still can't see the event. It is there... I can get to it throught he photos.

I can't mark him as being in a photo ... because he isn't considered a relative. So even though I've found him, put in an event, and am working on him, I CAN"T.

To get to his node i have to walk through the tree because he doesn't show up in search for me.

I have the same issue with other relatives.

I desperately need a way to make it so that data for anyone in the tree is visible... given that all involved in the tree have mutually consented. OR AT LEAST let us take the levels of indirection out a bunch more.

For those of us using Geni as a tool to help with historical research these limits are very problematic. E.g., I know my aunt would very happily let me have full viewing priv's for her husbands' side. (Especially to let me see the data that i entered!)

Same with everyone else in the tree.

FRUSTRATED.

A good example of when the BEFORE and AFTER dates would be useful is by looking at census data. Say I have found my great grandparents living together in the 1910 census, but in the 1920 census I have found only my great grandmother and she is listed as widowed. Now I know my great grandfather died between 1920 and 1930. Marking "circa 1925" would be incredibley misleading.

To counter the point " you don't know the dates, there will probably be ambiguity about place of birth, even name" ... incredibley not true. This information could have come from any number of sources.. the name could have come from anywhere (known famly knowledge, other census data, etc) and their birthdate could have come from anywhere (approx age from census data, draft cards, birth records, etc). Just because you don't have an approx death date doesn't mean that your other information isn't specific.

I think the smartest (and simplest) way to do #5 (a 'local' version of geni) is by having a "change history" for both the online and local version of your tree.

If I'm offline and using my local copy, every change I make gets recorded.. example
- May 16, 2008 - 10:00:00am Added "John Smith" as father of "Joe Smith".
- May 16, 2008 - 10:01:20am Updated Birth location of "John Smith" to "NYC, NY"
- May 16, 2008 - 10:03:00am Uploaded Photo "johnsmith.jpg" to album "Family"
- May 16, 2008 - 10:03:30am Tagged "John Smith" in photo "johnsmith.jpg"
.... etc

When the user connects to the internet and clicks on a "sync" button.. the recorded history (the 4 things above) would get repeated for the online version. Furthermore, the online version would have it's own 'history' that could sync to your local version. Any "conflicts" would ask the user the choose which version they'd prefer.

Most of the work would be in creating the application that runs locally, although this might end up being as simple as exporting the geni site to an executable.

As for #3 (identifying locations).. it would be nice to be able to get more specific than city/state .. I'm talking about actual addresses (123 Main St) so you could see all of the people who lived at that address over time. This could be taken further and be used as a way to find people in other members trees who lived at the same address. A powerful research tool!

I also am having trouble with the Advance Uploader. It was working fine until Monday.I wrote to help the other night and they suggested deleting the cookies and restarting but it did not work. I'm on a Mac and using both Safari & Firefox.

In Safari, the Java starts up and when it is done, I just get a little document icon with an X in it and that's it.

On Firefox, it doesn't even show the Java starting at all, page stays blank and at the bottom of the browser, there is a message of an error with Java lang. stacked overflow. I reinstalled Java hoping that was the problem but it remains showing the same error.

I downloaded Camino last night, thinking that using a new browser would solve the problem but that too came up with the same error.

Yet, I am able to use the advance uploader on Winkflash with no problem.

I have tried using it at work on a PC, using Firefox, and it does come up but it's takes a long time for it to set up and open a folder.

Thanks for bringing this esential feature back. As Aditya would say: Yay. Now we need to tell non-users to check this first, before starting a new tree.

"Privacy is broken. Check a random page* of people and click a person where "Added By" is private, and voila, there's the "Added By" person."
That seems like a privacy conflict. Adders should not be able to be non-viewable to the public, if the profiles they add are viewable. There has to be someone to contact if the profiles are not claimed.

In my experience, if you don't know the dates, there will probably be ambiguity about place of birth, even name. So I don't see the before and after range as solving very much. Take your best guess and check the circa box. A problem is that if you have a range of birth years, the personal timeline will not be able to tell the age at each event. You need to lock on one year.

What would be interesting would be ratings of accuracy for all data: 1 for definite, 2 for probably, 3 for just a guess or something like that. To let others know and remind yourself that anything that is not a 1 requires further research. An advanced sort could filter for these parameters. For dates the rating could be: 1 for exact, 2 for close (within 2 years), 3 for within 5 years or whatever. Separate field for day, month and year. It may be that you know the birthday but not the year.

I've noticed that the group uploader does not see PDF files but the simple one does. PDF is the scan format I chose for documents, because you can zoom in and control the zoom with PDF, which you can't with "TIFF" the other format on the scanner.

1. Cool. Very cool.
2. Privacy is broken. Check a random page* of people and click a person where "Added By" is private, and voila, there's the "Added By" person.
3. Would it be possible to get letter selection of second, and perhaps third, letter in last name? Some letters have literally hundreds of pages of names.
4. The number after every name does not seem to be right.
5. There seems to be several names missing in my family.

One way to obtain the essence of 5 would be when Geni has full GEDCOM import/export functionality. Then one could export into an offline program, edit, and later import into Geni.

I uploaded my family tree gedcom a few days ago - thanks Geni, it worked a treat (exactly what I had been holding out for the last year).

However, can I now upload my wife's family tree (she obviously appears in my tree too) or do I now need to wait for tree merging?

What would happen if I tried to upload the combined gedcom over my existing tree (I have several claimed profiles in my tree)?

@ Aditya,
I understand we can't find them in the pulldown or enter the names. I am trying to find a way to get around that. I am trying to figure out the privacy reasons and find a compromise that works for all. :-)

If we want to tag family friends who are in pictures or tag ancestors now deceased, e-mails won't help us. Or if the profiles are unclaimed in other trees than our own we may not have the e-mil addresses or a way to add them. I think providing a default setting that doesn't compromise the privacy of the person being tagged and and/or allowing a person to add the name to a photo but not link to a profile might be an answer.

The issue is you're not allowed to find their profile to tag them :)

Thus a non-linked name is the best you could do, which is what I've suggested :)

Actually I have a new suggestion:
Let us put in their e-mail address if we know them. Then they can be sent a message asking them if they want to be tagged in a photo outside their forest. If they say no, black text stays instead. (Black text should stay until they reply)

After reading the posts above I was thinking that I would prefer to be able to tag anyone in a photo with their name no matter whether they reside in my forest/tree or are not on Geni at all and not have the abilty to link to the profile of that person from the photo, if it is the security issue of being able to link from the photo to the profile, that prevents freely tagging my photos. Truthfully, if someone is in my photos, the chances are very good I know them and they are not going to care if they have a photo tagged in my album.

If the issue is being able to click on an identified face or name to get to that person's profile why doesn't the normal profile settings handle the situation as to who can view the profile? If the problem is because of unclaimed profiles, why can't there be a default as we have with deceased profiles. In the case of living unclaimed profiles I would think that public viewing would be disallowed and maybe only the profile adder and immediate family can see the full profile. Better yet disallow the ability to go to unclaimed profiles from the photo album. To allow us to tag friends not associated with Geni in photos that would have to be handled that way as well.

It just seems to me that there is a way for people's security issues to be addressed and photo identification to be made easier and meet the needs of the tangled web of family relations. :-)

Would love other's input on this....

When I create new folders and reorganize folders, the photos associated with events disappear or get mangled. I *used* to have pictures of immigration records associated with immigration events. Now I have photos of copmletely different things.

Grr. And because the photo browser doesn't show titles it is a super pain to reestablish these links.

I have uploaded a lot of census documents. When I look at a photo album it is impossible to tell which are which. It would be very nice if there were an excerpt of the label or at least a mouseover tooltip to indicate the name of the photo.

As recently requested, we have added a search box to our Directory of Family Names on Geni. This enables non-users to search for a name instead of navigating the directory.

This search is the same as the 'All of Geni.com' option our users can select.

It would be nice if Location was used more in Geni generally. I've seen requests for search by location which would be great and mass editing families who were all living in the same location. I'm putting forth another idea... Location tagging for photos and documents the timeline and profiles. If this could also be associated with a map of the local area that would be brilliant.

I've suggested 5 before. There's a number of good reasons to have an offline version: visiting family without internet, for the sake of a good backup, for offline research, to tide me over during downtime, to share with people that you don't want to futz with the tree... etc.

1. I have no friends!
2. I'm looking forward to the improved initial data entry screen. I have seen this requested by many people. Right now most of the people in my tree have no locations because people aren't going back to the 2nd edit screen to enter locations.
3. The map does this in a way, but not by time.
4. I have seen this requested by many people. A no-brainer.
5. Interesting. You could do an export (of just your Tree or individual Trees) and view locally using other software, but having the Geni platform offline would be nice, with events, comments etc. A premium service?

We are aware of the issue and are working on the fix. A few stories have been generated, but many have not. I believe that the fix will generate all of the missing stories, although I can't say with certainty. I'll update this thread when I learn more.
