I think you'll find there's a lot of flexibility in Geni for this. You should be able to add a child to any person by clicking the yellow downward-facing error from their box ("node") in the tree (if you don't see the arrows on that box, try refocusing the tree on that person by clicking the "tree" link in their tree node). Adding a child to someone who has no partners will create an empty box labeled "Add This Person" -- you can just leave it empty. If you prefer to not see the "Add This Person" boxes, open the Preferences tab at the bottom of the tree and turn on the checkbox labeled "Center single parents." Good luck!

Man this is the answer to my prayers, I love it.

@Mike, I hope this is a bug, when I first clicked on my merge issues which were 1778 it loaded 9 which signified it didn't load the merge issues of my Collaborators, after I found where to enter the check mark to include my Collaborators it loaded the 1778.

I started working on one issue when I clicked on View Profile for that issue it did not open a new Tab and upon completion I had to go back to my Home page to click on my merge issues to start again, if it opened a new Tab I could have easily gone back to the Merge Issue list on the original Tab.

So to continue I returned to my Home page, it showed 1777 Merge Issues when I clicked on it only loaded 9 again on my list, again not including my Collaborators, so I had to enter the check mark to include Collaborators. Could that check mark remain until we take it off like it used to be before?

Hi Folks,
I need some advice on the following issue:

I registered to Geni using a wrong email address and started building a tree. After a few days I tried logging in but had forgot the password so tried to using the Forgot Password link but now the password has been reset and the link has been sent to the wrong email. The wrong email belongs to some other person and until he replies I am stuck. What can I do? I contacted help@geni.com but the guys are not replying.

Here is the issue with example for any Geni employees that might want to help me here:

I wanted to create a account for my uncle with the email naren.xxxx@gmail.com but instead created it with narendra.xxxx@gmail.com. The next time I tried to login and could not I tried the forgot password only to realise that the email I was using is wrong. I realised this because when I tried to login to narendra.xxxx@gmail.com it kicked me out.

Now I am stuck with a wrong person having access to my tree due to my mistake. That person is not replying to my emails so basically I have a dead node in the tree. Unfortunately this is the main node so I cant proceed.

Please help

@shmuelakam first of all, we obviously appreciate the work you do cleaning the sections of the tree you work on. We released a number of enhancements last night designed to help users like you who are frequently merging profiles. Only one of these features is Pro only. At this point letting any user break trees seems more dangerous than it is worth, so we've decided to restrict this to users who both have the tools to fix broken tree (Pro's) and users who have shown some interest in being a power user (Pro's and other users such as yourself). Hopefully we can continue to release tools for all users to help facilitate merges and clean up the tree. As a basic user, I'd love your feedback on what we released last night. Your non-Pro point of view is always helpful and appreciated.

@brad, As I stated I am unable to send a screen shot however this problem is still apparant. I've not been well so can't put a huge effort into Geni at the moment but suggest you take a look at the profiles I previously suggested. They have a multitude of duplicates and this may be causing the glitch.

Sometimes you can see the nodes by clicking on the window but not permanently.

The think genealogy map is about as good as you're going to get as far as a standard for this stuff. Just like Wikipedia, "There is no such thing as a final conclusion. New information can support, question, or disprove your current conclusion." The terms do resonate with me, and it will be interesting to see how you work in confidence levels and the like.

@brox we'll be adding the managers list to the profile as well. Regarding the immediate families in the side by side for a pending merge, color-coding is a bit tricky with the way that side-by-side does comparisons, so we've left that off for now. We could potentially work on that, based on feedback here and prioritization against other enhancements. The pending merge / cycle indicator that you describe is likely NOT a new bug; I think it's the same merging but that occasionally crops up. I'll take a close look at it today. You could try opening the Edit Relationships card (in the tree) for one of the spouses -- I added some code there to automatically repair those scenarios.

I'll make a note to fix the "hidden child" error that you got.

@BoGar the best way for us to help you with a specific problem, is for you to send an email to help@geni.com with the URL / address of the page that's giving you the error.

Making the "merge request sent" link point to the actual request is not trivial due to pagination. I can do it but I've got some more important bugs and enhancements to take care of first.

@dwalton76 that's an interesting suggestion, but I'm not sure how we'd display that in a meaningful way. Let me talk to the product team about it to see if they have any ideas.

<p>You still have the problem that the side-by-side view does not show the connections that matches, comes from other pending merge profiles and what connections the profiles brings into the merge.</p>

We implemented this change with last night's release. Color-coding is a bit tricky with the way that side-by-side does comparisons, so we've left that off for now. We could potentially work on that, based on feedback here and prioritization against other enhancements.

Merge issues list
- I like the changes, they make handling large merge issues list a little easier.
- Could we get a filter option to show "Everything except Merge Request Pending"?
- Agreed with Brox that the "merge request pending" link should point to the specific request and not the generic request sent list.

Pending Merges
I think this change will be a big help towards avoiding incorrect merges.

Suggestion though...let's say I'm merging a duplicate for George Washington and I'm an editor on the main profile along with several other people but I am not collaborating with the owner of the duplicate profile (let's call the duplicate owner John Doe). It would be GREAT if there were a way for me to see which of the other editors have family-group/collaborator rights with John Doe and send the merge request to one of those editors to complete the merge.

Removing Relationships
Thank you thank you thank you. I was able to clean up a part of the tree last night that had been a complete mess for months. I am seeing some of the weird cycles Brox mentioned where there is a cycle listed for each duplicate pending a merge.

Overall though this is a nice set of changes!

I've actually seen this "multiple copies" behavior in the trees for parents for different versions of families being merged, for months now. I believe I've sometimes even seen the multiple copies behavior between parents that are completely merged!, just reflecting the historical differences between the copies of the merged families, and then I've had to sort them out. I've dealt with it in the past by going through all the kids and using "resolve conflicts" to pick between the identical-looking sets of parents (using the resulting tree preview to know if I picked the correct one, and creating a conflict first if necessary in order to be able to move the children), until all children who are full siblings in actuality are on the tree too. (I realize "set parents" should have been equivalent, but sometimes I can do what I describe even when I don't have permissions to edit the profile, and "set parents" has seemed rather dangerous to me at times.) Usually if I do this sibling moving enough, the multiple copies of the family go away, especially if the parents were already fully merged with their previously-duplicate profiles. But, I do think that this could be improved. I think that the new relationship breaking tools are just exposing the details to us better as end users. Which could be useful, or could be dangerous, both.

I do completely agree that listing the marriage multiple times in the Relationships tab and allowing some of them to be broken when there's a pending merge, seems on the surface to be dangerous.

The best approach might be to fix this behavior, and automatically merge the display of families together if both parents are stacked, whether the merge is pending or just an "open issue" not yet requested to be merged by anybody. Then nobody would be tempted to push buttons they shouldn't in order to try to make their tree look prettier? Should the new-and-improved break-connections option in the Relationships tab in the case of stacked profiles be tweaked to only show a stacked marriage once? Probably, but I don't know what we would lose if we made that change?

Looks like you have introduced some new errors in the new relationships code.

Married couples gets a cycle indicator in the tree view pointing to them selves if both or one of the profiles have a pending merge.

The children is listed with parent conflict, but resolving it shows the same sets.

Support ticket: [#XXX-514432] Cycle indicators caused by pending merges

This is however a place in the tree where we had a "Tabitha married to Tabitha (her duplicate) error"

EDIT: If a profile is married to a profile with pending merges the same profile is listed multiple times as "married to" in the Relationships tab. (one for each duplicate)

EDIT 2: Even worse... http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu41/bpbrox/SolveigMultipleMarriages.png There is no pending merge profiles here, except one duplicate on one of the wrongly linked husbands. On this specific profile I did however have a 42-profile data conflicts stack I was unable to clear until you fixed that specific error.

<p>Great!</p>
<p>You should however take a look on "[#HJJ-627304]: Merge requests not cleared."</p>
<p>Most of my "Merge request pending" items in that list was not real, and since I have 43 pages in my requests/sent list the link in the merge issues list should go to the specific request.
</p>

@mike
I can't even see my list or use the link in your message.
When I want to "refresh" or look for merge request to some of the "famous" managers in our family group - I keep on getting the message "We are experiencing technical difficulties"
It seems that I'm almost alone with this exact problem (in my family group)

Can you help me?

I am sorry, I don´t quite understand this conversation and advises in it.

Propably it is question about those 12 persons, which I am asked to add to the map ?

Now they are all those whose location I either don´t know, or don´t for privacy reasons want to add. Please add refress.

It's great that you list all managers of a profile too.

How can I view this list on the profile it selves?

I just exported the tree of my wife´s (logged in as she). The exported tree was exatly 5000 profiles and profiles seem to be missing. Does this mean, that non PRO members are not allowed to export bigger trees than 5000 ?

Yes, you can share 20 at the time in the View List section if you sort by managed by you, unshared, starting at the last page.

You have however still have to click on the share link in each row.

I guess you already know about the bulks share button in your managed profiles settings to share all your historical profiles, and if you have already pressed it you have to ask help@geni.com to reset it because you have new historical profiles to share.

Noah on "Merging Enhancements"

We've released a number of enhancements tonight designed to help facilitate merges:

Merge Issues List

Use the show advanced controls link to expose new columns and filters:

New Columns

Modified by: The last user to act on the merge issue, usually the person who created it

Modified on: When the merge issue was last modified

Manager: The manager of the profile with the merge issue

New Filters

Merge Issue: View a specific type of merge issue

Show only modified by: See all merge issues modified by a certain user

Show only managed by: Only show profiles managed by a certain user

Note the modified on and merge issue columns are sortable.

View your merge issues list

Pending Merges

Separate immediate families: The immediate family accurately lists the immediate family separately for each profile. This helps you determine which immediate family members each profile brings into the merge and verify whether you are merging the right profiles.

Choose request recipient: Choose which manager should receive your merge request (choose from. anyone who managed a profile that was merged into the profile). Use this feature to route your request to the manager most likely to complete the merge.

Pending merge date: The date the merge was created now follows the name of the person who created the merge.

Removing relationships

Sometimes breaking a relationship is the easiest way to correct certain parts of the tree. But breaking relationships can be dangerous because it can also break the tree into two separate, disconnected trees.

Because Pro users have additional tools, such as advanced search and tree matches, that can help them connect broken trees, they can now remove any relationship on a profile (if they have permission). Relationships that may break the tree are now listed in a separate section of a profile's relationships tab in the tree. Please be careful out there!

The new "Remove Connection" feature has been released. @shmuelakam I started a response to the question of how non-subscribers should deal with this, but eventually decided this was better handled by Noah.

when you click on "view all" in the timline section of a profile that contains more tha 8 events I get redirected to the timeline/view_all page. I want to remain on the people page ao that I can print the profile with all information visible.

I see no reason to restrict the number of events visible on the page. If a person has 30 events then they should always be displayed.
